In fact, temperatures in the Windy City climbed over 66 degrees for six straight days. In the 145 years of record-keeping prior, there were only nine days above 66 degrees during February. Dozens of places on the eastern half of the country are experiencing the warmest February on record. These cities include Dallas, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Washington DC.
What Happened to Winter?
Snow has also been a non-factor during much of 2017. Chicago has seen only 0.6 inches of snow this year. The normal amount for the same period is usually close to 20 inches. Minneapolis has also seen significantly less snowfall than usual, with only 0.3 inches falling during the month of February – tying a record for the least ever in that month.
With records being broken all over the country, the February heat has allowed spring to arrive early – and plants are following suit. Such a sudden change of seasons means many people are likely unprepared for the coming barrage of pollen and other allergens.
