What to specify on a Carport.com barn

In this industry a “barn” is not just a tall garage. Ag buildings need a wide, unobstructed center for animals or equipment, lean-tos that can become stalls, and a roof that sheds snow and rain off hay and bedding. Carport.com maps those needs onto the same American-steel system as our garages — three barn roof families, optional enclosure, and certified wind/snow packages where the county requires them.

Three barn roof families

  1. County — Regular arched roof with horizontal panels. The economical barn when snow load is modest.
  2. Ridgeline — A-frame (boxed-eave) with horizontal panels. Classic gable look, good runoff.
  3. Valley — Vertical panels on a continuous roof that spans the center and lean-tos. Best in heavy rain or snow — the industry preference for hay and livestock barns.

  • Open center for horses, cattle, tractors, or a wash bay; enclose it if you want a shop.
  • One lean-to or both sides — stalls, feed, tack, or covered parking.
  • Interior walls and frame-outs for pens you finish later.

A metal garage is a lockable box for vehicles. A barn keeps a wide working aisle and usually adds lean-tos for animals or feed. A standalone lean-to is a single-slope add-on. What is a metal barn?

A metal barn is a prefabricated steel agricultural building: typically a clear center span with one or two lean-tos. Carport.com builds them from American 14-gauge frames (12-gauge upgrade) and 29-gauge sheeting, in County, Ridgeline, or Valley roof families, sized to livestock, hay, or equipment.

County vs. Ridgeline vs. Valley barn?

County is a Regular arched roof with horizontal panels — the value option. Ridgeline is an A-frame boxed-eave with horizontal panels. Valley uses vertical panels on a roof that runs continuously over the center and lean-tos, so rain and snow shed better. Valley is the usual choice in snow country and for hay storage.

How is a steel barn different from a metal garage?

A garage is a fully enclosed vehicle box. A barn is laid out for animals and equipment: a wide aisle, optional stalls in the lean-tos, and more airflow. You can enclose a barn center and add garage doors if you also need a shop.

What size metal barn do I need?

Size from the animal or machine, not a generic “two-stall” label. A horse needs aisle width to turn, stall depth, and door height; a tractor needs cab clearance (leg height) and implement length. Do metal barns work for horses and hay?
